The Music of Eric Whitacre

The music of Eric Whitacre

Mark and I spent the past weekend in New York City. We flew up to see our younger son perform at the Lincoln Center as part of the Distinguished Concerts International New York program. Under the direction of Eric Whitacre, high schools from all over the world came together for a weekend of rehearsals followed by a spectacular performance of vocal talent. Blue Ridge High School represented 50 out of 200 students, which is a testament to the leadership of Laura Morris, the school's chorus teacher.

Over a year ago, she sent in an audition tape of the chorus, and then intently began fundraising for the group. You can imagine that airfare and hotel rooms in NYC aren’t cheap. She is skilled in building relationships with and among group members, and has served as a guide and a sounding board for these talented youth.

NYC has her share of coffee shops, so I was able to grab a cup of chai tea and almond biscotti and reflect on the weekend. My heart was full of gratitude for the people and experiences that have shaped and molded my children. I was a mere spectator for this event, a culmination of precision practices and a desire to rise above the art form. God has given me the honor of raising boys, and this journey fills my heart with joy. In the end, my role is that of a spectator as I slowly remind myself that they are in God's care.

I watch my guys unfold into men, and I know that the creator of the universe loves them more than I love them. Yahweh uniquely made them to shine His light into our world. I think of their coaches, trainers, teachers, pastors, friends, friends’ parents, mentors grandparents, and others that have poured love and life into them. And I am thankful for this village of kind people who push them to be their best.

We're far removed from Manhattan, but the joy of this experience will stay with us forever. I'd love to hear how your village speaks life into your children.
